Michael David, Kit Karbler and Miguel Guzman met in 1979 and soon began working in collaboration on art glass and opened the Blake Street Glass studio. A trained team of young artisans are also there to help handle large pieces and to cut and polish the glass. Michael, Kit and Miguel designed and built most of the equipment at the studio by hand. The historical aspect of glass production has always intrigued them. Their original designs are achieved by layering, threading, cutting and polishing handblown glass into prismatic forms. Their works are distinguished by thin, concentric lines of colored glass, in gem-like hues, immobilized in clear crystal. Bottles were some of the first vessels they made and their trademark objects. They like that because, historically, perfume bottles were some of the first vessels made of glass. The mixing of form and function comes naturally to David and Karbler. It might not always look functional by it can be. They like to take objects beyond their intended function. "The primary purpose of the vessels we make is not to hold objects but to hold your imagination and light." They are well known for transforming ordinary objects into sculptural art. |
