JON KUHN

Jon Kuhn was born in 1949. He earned his BFA in ceramics from Washburn University in 1972, an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1978, and set up his own studio in Staunton, Virginia. He has been an independent studio artist ever since.

In 1985, Jon moved his studio to Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Here he developed his current style of work, consisting of pate de verre sections that were laminated together. These complex pieces often include between 5,000 to 6,000 components, and may take between one and two years to complete. He has a unique style of building his glass pieces. While most other glass sculpture is blown and worked molten, Jon's glass is cut, fused, polished and assembled cold.

Jon Kuhn is one of the leading artists working in laminated glass in the United States today. His pieces are in such prestigious places as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Smithsonian Institution, the White House, the Museum Fur Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg, and the Musee des Arts Decoratif, Lausanne, Switzerland. His work is discussed in several pubications including American Craft: Source Book for the Home, and Glass: State of the Art 1984 (and 1989).

Jon's current business, Kuhn Studios, Inc., is located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He is married to University of Kansa graduate Sharon Gill Kuhn and has four children.
